Payment service providers in Japan
Japan is a high-value, low-fraud market with distinct habits: many shoppers still prefer to pay at a convenience store or by bank transfer, and domestic brands like JCB and PayPay matter as much as Visa. This page lists {count} payment gateways and providers that accept Japanese yen (JPY) or support Japan in their coverage.
Local payment methods in Japan
- Cards: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex and Diners; installment and bonus-payment options are common with local issuers.
- Konbini: pay at 7-Eleven, Lawson or FamilyMart with a payment number — key for younger and card-averse users.
- Bank transfer (furikomi) and Pay-easy for bills and higher tickets.
- QR and e-wallets: PayPay, Rakuten Pay, d払い, au PAY, plus carrier billing; see local APMs.
Regulation
The Financial Services Agency (FSA) oversees funds transfer service providers, prepaid payment instruments and crypto-asset exchange service providers, which must register. The Installment Sales Act sets security rules for card acquirers and payment agencies. Gambling is largely prohibited outside public sports and pachinko, so gaming merchants rarely get domestic acquiring.
Typical verticals
Cross-border e-commerce, digital content, games and subscriptions do well, but Japanese customers expect a localised checkout with konbini and bank transfer options and Japanese-language receipts. Payout providers serve creators, affiliates and marketplace sellers.
How to choose a PSP for Japan
- JCB acceptance and approval rates for foreign merchants
- Konbini and Pay-easy coverage, confirmation speed
- Wallet support (PayPay and others) for cross-border merchants
- Settlement currency (JPY vs USD) and FX costs
