Payment processing in Germany
Germany is Europe's most "non-card" large market. German shoppers prefer to pay after delivery or straight from their bank account: invoice (Kauf auf Rechnung) and BNPL, SEPA direct debit (Lastschrift), PayPal and bank transfers dominate online checkout, while credit cards cover a smaller share than in the UK or France. The domestic debit scheme girocard is mostly used at physical POS. Payment and e-money institutions are supervised by BaFin together with the Bundesbank; online gambling is licensed by the Joint Gambling Authority of the German states (GGL) under the 2021 State Treaty. {count} providers on this page declare Germany coverage.
What German merchants look for
- Payment mix: direct debit, invoice/BNPL and wallets are often more important than cards — check which of them a PSP actually offers in Germany.
- SEPA tools: SEPA transfers and open banking pay-by-bank with instant confirmation.
- Risk on direct debit: return windows for SEPA debits create chargeback-like risk; ask about scoring and return handling.
- Settlement: EUR, payout frequency, reserve.
- Licensing: a PSP passported from another EU country is common; confirm the contracting entity and data processing terms under GDPR.
High-risk verticals in Germany
Licensed sports betting and virtual slots are allowed under GGL rules with strict deposit limits; unlicensed operators are actively blocked, including at the payment level. Forex/CFD, adult, dating and nutra merchants should check each provider's risk policy and look at high-risk merchants.
Crypto and liquidity
Crypto payments in Germany and liquidity providers in Germany cover stablecoin settlement and on/off-ramp under MiCA.
