Payment processing in Tanzania
Tanzania is a mobile-money-first market. Most consumers pay and get paid through wallets of mobile network operators — M-Pesa (Vodacom), Airtel Money, Mixx by Yas (formerly Tigo Pesa), HaloPesa and others — using USSD menus or apps, while card and bank account penetration is much lower. The Bank of Tanzania licenses payment system providers and e-money issuers and runs the TIPS instant payment switch that makes wallets and banks interoperable. Sports betting and gaming are licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania. {count} providers on this page declare Tanzania coverage.
Payment methods in Tanzania
- Mobile money — the dominant pay-in and payout method, usually via push (USSD prompt) or pull payments.
- E-wallets and QR — app-based payments and merchant QR.
- Bank transfer and cards — for B2B, higher tickets and international buyers.
- Other local APMs and crypto — cross-border settlement options.
How to choose a PSP in Tanzania
- Operator coverage: which MNO wallets are connected directly and which through aggregators.
- Success rate and timeouts: USSD push payments fail when customers don't confirm in time — ask about retry logic.
- Settlement: TZS locally or USD/USDT abroad; check conversion and repatriation timelines.
- Payouts: bulk disbursements to wallets, per-transaction and daily wallet limits.
- Verticals: betting is a large licensed segment; offshore operators should confirm risk policy before onboarding.
Betting, iGaming and P2P
Operators looking for a betting payment gateway in Tanzania usually combine mobile money aggregators with P2P processing for capacity. Merchants in Tanzania and liquidity providers are listed separately.
