Accepting payments from China
Chinese consumers pay almost entirely through Alipay and WeChat Pay, with UnionPay cards as the main card scheme; Visa and Mastercard play a small role domestically. For most foreign merchants the question is not domestic acquiring — which requires a local entity and PBOC-licensed partners — but cross-border acceptance: letting Chinese buyers pay in CNY through their wallets while the merchant is settled abroad in USD, EUR or HKD. Capital controls and the foreign exchange administration (SAFE) shape how funds move in and out. {count} providers on this page declare China coverage.
Payment methods
- E-wallets in China — Alipay and WeChat Pay, including cross-border versions for overseas merchants, QR and in-app payments.
- Cards in China — UnionPay debit and credit; international cards for outbound travellers.
Typical use cases
- Cross-border e-commerce, SaaS and education selling to Chinese users.
- Travel, hospitality and duty-free accepting Chinese tourists' wallets.
- Chinese businesses collecting from abroad — marketplace sellers, game studios and apps that need international cards, local APMs in other countries and payouts back to China.
- Supplier payments to Chinese manufacturers via cross-border payment providers.
How to choose a provider
- Which wallets are supported, and whether it is cross-border or domestic acceptance.
- Settlement currency and FX markup, settlement cycle, reserve.
- Restricted verticals: gambling is illegal in mainland China, and crypto activity is banned, so providers screen these flows strictly.
- Data and documentation requirements (PIPL, KYB of the foreign entity).
