Payment processing in Uganda
Uganda's digital payments run on mobile money. Two operator wallets — MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money — handle most consumer payments, salaries, school fees and merchant collections, typically through USSD prompts or apps, and agent networks turn cash into e-money across the country. Cards and bank accounts matter mainly for urban, B2B and international flows. The Bank of Uganda licenses payment service providers and e-money issuers under the National Payment Systems Act; betting and gaming are licensed by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board. {count} providers on this page declare Uganda coverage.
Payment methods in Uganda
- Mobile money — MTN MoMo and Airtel Money pay-in and bulk payouts.
- Bank transfer — EFT and RTGS for B2B and larger payouts.
- Cards — Visa and Mastercard for international buyers and e-commerce.
- Other local APMs and crypto — regional and cross-border options.
How to choose a PSP in Uganda
- Direct MNO integration or aggregator: direct connections tend to be more stable; aggregators give one API for both networks and often for neighbouring Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.
- Confirmation flow: push prompts versus customer-initiated payments with a merchant code; check timeouts and reconciliation.
- Settlement: UGX locally or USD/USDT offshore; check FX source and settlement frequency.
- Payouts: wallet disbursements, transaction and daily limits, fees per payout.
- Taxes: mobile money transactions carry levies that affect pricing — ask who bears them.
Betting and iGaming
Sports betting is popular and licensed locally; operators should confirm that a provider accepts gaming traffic and supports player payouts at scale. Capacity for peaks around big football matches is a practical question to raise. For alternative flows, see P2P processing.
