Payment processing in the UAE
The UAE is a high-income, card-first market: Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay dominate online checkout, BNPL is widely used for retail and travel, and the Central Bank's new instant payment platform Aani is bringing account-to-account payments by phone number. The dirham (AED) is pegged to the US dollar, which simplifies settlement for international merchants. The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) licenses retail payment service providers; the financial free zones DIFC (DFSA) and ADGM (FSRA) have their own regulators, Dubai's VARA oversees virtual assets, and the GCGRA regulates commercial gaming. {count} providers on this page declare UAE coverage.
Payment methods in the UAE
- Cards — local and international cards, 3-D Secure, installment plans from banks.
- E-wallets and Apple Pay — high share of mobile checkout.
- BNPL — split payments for e-commerce, travel and electronics.
- Bank transfer — UAEFTS and Aani instant transfers, standard payout rail.
How to choose a PSP in the UAE
- Mainland vs. free-zone entity: acquiring terms differ for mainland, free-zone and offshore companies; check what your licence allows.
- Settlement: AED or USD, frequency, rolling reserve; multi-currency accounts for GCC sales.
- GCC coverage: Saudi mada, KNET in Kuwait and other regional methods if you sell across the Gulf.
- KYB: proof of substance, trade licence activities and UBO checks.
High-risk, crypto and forex
Dubai is a hub for forex brokers, crypto companies, prop-trading firms and other high-risk businesses. Banks are cautious, so these merchants often work with specialised PSPs, EMIs and OTC desks. See exchangers in the UAE, liquidity providers and teams in the UAE.
