How Apple Pay acceptance works

Apple Pay is a wallet layer on top of card payments. The customer confirms the payment with Face ID or Touch ID, the device passes a network token instead of the card number, and the transaction is processed by an acquirer as a regular Visa, Mastercard or Amex payment. For a merchant this means Apple Pay is not a separate rail: you need a payment provider or acquirer that supports Apple Pay tokens and a checkout that shows the button on Safari and iOS.

Who needs Apple Pay

  • E-commerce and subscriptions with a high share of iPhone traffic — one-tap checkout usually lifts mobile conversion.
  • Apps and digital goods selling outside the App Store (where rules allow).
  • iGaming and other high-risk verticals: some acquirers allow Apple Pay deposits, many do not. Ask about Apple Pay for casino traffic explicitly, together with the MCC.

Fees, settlement and limits

Apple does not charge merchants a separate fee; you pay the card processing rate of your PSP. Settlement time follows your acquiring agreement (often T+1 to T+3 for low-risk, longer with a rolling reserve for high-risk). Transaction limits are set by the issuer and your provider, not by Apple. Chargebacks work as with cards: tokenisation reduces fraud, but disputes are still possible.

How to accept Apple Pay payments

  1. 1.Pick a PSP or card acquiring provider that supports Apple Pay on web and in-app.
  2. 2.Verify your domain and set up a merchant identifier (often handled by the provider).
  3. 3.Add the button to a hosted payment page, SDK or cashier.

What to check with a provider

  • Supported verticals and GEOs, 3-D Secure handling, recurring with Apple Pay tokens.
  • Whether Apple Pay is available for payouts or only pay-ins.
