Payment processing in France
France is a mature card market built around Cartes Bancaires (CB), the domestic scheme co-badged with Visa or Mastercard on most cards. Routing a transaction through CB instead of the international network can lower costs, so local acquiring matters. Beyond cards, customers use SEPA transfers and SEPA Instant, wallets such as PayPal and Apple Pay, and installment options for higher tickets. Banks, payment institutions and e-money institutions are authorised by the ACPR; crypto-asset service providers moved from the AMF's PSAN regime to MiCA licensing. {count} providers on this page declare France coverage.
What French merchants look for
- CB routing and 3-D Secure (PSD2 SCA): check whether the acquirer supports CB natively and how it handles exemptions.
- SEPA tools: SEPA transfers, direct debit for subscriptions and open banking pay-by-bank.
- Settlement in EUR, rolling reserve and chargeback handling.
- EU passporting: many providers serve France from another EU licence — confirm which entity contracts with you.
High-risk verticals in France
The ANJ licenses online sports betting, horse-race betting and poker; online casino games are not authorised. Forex/CFD marketing is tightly restricted by the AMF. Merchants in these segments, as well as dating, nutra and subscription businesses, should look for high-risk merchant accounts and check every PSP's risk policy rather than assume acceptance.
