What makes a merchant high risk
Acquirers label a business high risk when it combines elevated chargebacks, regulatory exposure or reputational risk. Typical examples: forex and CFD brokers, binary options, prop trading firms, crypto, dating, nutra, CBD and vape shops, MLM, skins and loot-box trading, fantasy sports, ticket resale, essay services and aggressive subscriptions. Mainstream processors such as Stripe or PayPal often close these accounts, so merchants look for a high risk payment processor that underwrites the model up front.
Where a high risk merchant account comes from
- Specialised acquirers with high-risk programmes, often processing under MCC 5967 (direct marketing), 7995 (gambling) or 6211 (securities).
- Offshore merchant accounts in jurisdictions with wider risk appetite — mind settlement delays and currency.
- Aggregators with cascading that route between several acquirers (aggregators).
- Local and alternative rails: local methods, crypto processing and P2P processing where cards are weak.
High-risk PSP checklist
- Written acceptance of your exact model and GEO list — "instant approval" offers for high-risk traffic deserve extra scrutiny.
- Rolling reserve (commonly 5–15%) and hold period; settlement frequency and currency.
- Chargeback ratio thresholds, alerts, 3DS and chargeback management.
- KYB documents and licences you will need — see legal and licensing.
- Payout support for refunds and client withdrawals.
How to use this hub
Companies shows high-risk merchants, Requests shows who is looking for a PSP right now, Offers shows published terms from providers. Providers can treat it as a high risk PSP list in reverse: a list of merchants to approach. Merchants should post a request with volumes, GEOs and chargeback history — complete requests get more relevant replies. Nominal hub lists companies and requests; it does not approve or process payments.
