Payments for online education

Online schools, course creators, tutoring marketplaces, language apps and certification platforms sell digital access, often to a global audience. Their payment needs differ from retail: installments for expensive programmes, subscriptions for apps, and payouts to tutors and authors.

What EdTech merchants usually need

  • Installments and BNPL for courses priced in the hundreds or thousands — BNPL.
  • Subscriptions with dunning and card updater — recurring payments.
  • Local methods in big learning markets: UPI in India, PIX in Brazil, wallets in Southeast Asia.
  • Split payments and payouts to tutors and course authors — payouts.
  • Merchant of record services that handle VAT and sales tax on digital goods in many countries.

Choosing a PSP for an education business

  • Cross-border acceptance: foreign cards from students abroad and settlement in your currency (cross-border).
  • Refund policy support: trial periods and refund windows without triggering disputes.
  • Fraud on digital goods: card testing on cheap courses is common — check antifraud.
  • Fees on small tickets vs high-ticket programmes.
  • Hosted checkout or payment links for creators without developers (payment links).

Some education-adjacent models — essay writing, trading and signal courses, "get-rich" programmes — are underwritten as high risk; see essay services and high-risk.

Using the page

Education merchants list their markets, average ticket and monthly volume; providers reply in the Requests tab or publish an offer. If you run a school or course platform, post a request describing your billing model.
