What UPI is and why merchants need it

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India's real-time account-to-account rail run by NPCI. Customers pay from PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or any bank app by scanning a QR, approving an intent or entering a VPA (UPI ID). For most Indian audiences UPI converts far better than cards, so any business accepting payments in India — e-commerce, SaaS, gaming, forex, education — sooner or later looks for a UPI payment gateway.

How UPI acceptance works

• UPI Intent: the checkout opens the customer's UPI app directly on mobile; usually the highest conversion.
• UPI Collect: the customer enters a VPA and approves a request in the app.
• Dynamic QR: a QR with the exact amount for desktop and in-store flows.
• Payouts: refunds and withdrawals usually go back over IMPS, NEFT or UPI to a bank account or VPA (see RTGS / bank rails in India).

Providers on this page connect via a REST API, H2H integration or a hosted payment page. Some run classic licensed aggregator flows, others work through P2P processing with trader accounts — the model affects stability, limits and how disputes are handled.

What to check with a UPI provider

• Supported flows (intent, collect, QR) and success rate on mobile.
• Pay-in and payout fees, minimum volume, settlement currency (INR or USDT) and frequency.
• Per-transaction and daily limits, refund handling and UPI chargeback/dispute process.
• Accepted verticals: many UPI merchant accounts exclude gambling, forex or adult traffic.
• Webhooks, status checks and reconciliation tools.
