SWIFT transfers in a payment stack

SWIFT is the messaging network banks use for international wire transfers in dozens of currencies. Unlike SEPA or local instant rails, a SWIFT payment can pass through one or more correspondent banks, so timing ranges from same day to several business days and intermediary fees may be deducted on the way. For businesses it remains the default for large B2B amounts, supplier payments and settlement between PSPs and merchants outside the euro zone.

Who uses SWIFT on this site

  • PSPs and merchants settling in USD, EUR or other currencies across borders.
  • Exporters and SaaS companies receiving payments from clients abroad.
  • Payment teams and exchangers moving liquidity between banks and OTC desks.

Ways to receive and send SWIFT payments

  • Multi-currency business accounts at banks or EMIs with SWIFT IBAN or account details.
  • Collection accounts and virtual accounts in major currencies from cross-border providers.
  • Payout APIs that send SWIFT wires with charge options OUR, SHA or BEN.

Fees and settlement

Typical costs include a sending fee, possible correspondent deductions and the FX spread if conversion happens. Compare the all-in cost per transfer rather than the headline fee. Settlement depends on the corridor; payments to sanctioned or high-risk jurisdictions may be blocked or delayed by compliance checks.

What to ask a provider

  • Which currencies and corridors are supported, and through which correspondent banks.
  • Whether incoming third-party payments are accepted (important for marketplaces and PSPs).
  • FX rates, cut-off times, tracking (gpi), and how returns are handled.
  • KYB requirements and accepted business models.
