QR payments explained

QR payments let a customer scan a code with a banking or wallet app and confirm the transfer. Most national instant-payment systems now run on interoperable QR standards: QRIS in Indonesia, PromptPay in Thailand, VietQR (NAPAS) in Vietnam, DuitNow QR in Malaysia, QR Ph in the Philippines, PIX QR in Brazil, SBP QR in Russia, CoDi in Mexico. For online merchants a dynamic QR is often the main desktop flow and a deep link on mobile.

How QR acceptance works

  • Dynamic QR: generated per order with a fixed amount and expiry; payment is matched automatically.
  • Static QR: one code per merchant, the payer enters the amount — simpler but harder to reconcile.
  • Deep link / intent for mobile checkout instead of scanning.
  • Payouts: usually made over the same national rail to an account or alias, not via QR.

What to check with a QR payment provider

  • Which national QR schemes and banks/wallets are supported in each GEO.
  • Licensed merchant onboarding vs aggregator sub-merchant vs P2P processing.
  • Fees, minimums and settlement currency; FX for cross-border merchants.
  • QR expiry, partial payments and overpayment handling.
  • Refund process and dispute rules of the local scheme.
