Bank transfers as a payment method

A bank transfer moves money straight from the payer's account to the merchant's or provider's account. In many countries it is the main way to pay large tickets or top up accounts: SPEI in Mexico, PSE in Colombia, instant transfers in Brazil and Turkey, EFT in South Africa, local transfers in Nigeria and Kenya. Bank transfers carry no card-style chargebacks and usually cost less than card acquiring.

Common models

  • Virtual accounts: each customer or order gets a unique account number for automatic reconciliation.
  • Pay-by-bank / open banking: the customer authorises the transfer in their bank interface (see open banking).
  • Manual transfer with reference — cheap but slower to confirm.
  • P2P transfers to trader accounts, confirmed by the provider (P2P processing).
  • Bank payouts: withdrawals, supplier and mass payouts to local accounts (see payouts).

What to check

  • Which rails are covered in each country (instant vs batch) and cut-off times.
  • Pay-in and payout fees, FX margin, minimums.
  • Name matching, return handling and refund mechanics.
  • Settlement currency and timing, especially for cross-border merchants.
  • KYB, licences and whether accounts are held in the merchant's name.
