What a payment orchestration platform does

A payment orchestration platform puts one API and one dashboard on top of several PSPs, acquirers and alternative payment methods. Instead of hard-coding each provider, the merchant or PSP sends every transaction to the orchestrator, which decides where to route it, retries soft declines on another acquirer and normalises reporting. It is the usual next step once a business processes through more than two or three providers.

Core features to expect

  • Smart routing: rules by BIN, card country, currency, amount, vertical or historical approval rate.
  • Cascading and retries: automatic re-routing after a decline, with limits to avoid duplicate charges.
  • Tokenisation and vault: cards stored once and reusable across providers, which simplifies PSP migration.
  • Unified reporting: one view of approval rates, fees and settlements across all connections.
  • Checkout layer: hosted payment page or SDK with local payment methods per country.

Orchestration vs aggregator

An aggregator gives you its own contracts and processes the money; an orchestration provider is usually technology only, and you keep your own merchant agreements. Some vendors offer both. Clarify who is the merchant of record, who holds funds and who carries PCI DSS scope.

How to choose

  • Number and quality of ready connectors for your GEOs.
  • Pricing: per-transaction fee, monthly SaaS fee or volume tiers.
  • Uptime SLA and failover if the orchestrator itself is down.
  • Data ownership and ease of exporting tokens if you leave.
  • Fit with your antifraud and cashier stack.
