Recurring billing as a vertical
Subscription merchants — memberships, content platforms, apps, subscription boxes, clubs and continuity offers — live on rebills. Their economics depend on how many renewals succeed, how fast failed payments are recovered and how few customers dispute charges they forgot about. Acquirers know this, which is why aggressive continuity models are often treated as high risk.
What to look for in a subscription payment provider
- Card-on-file and merchant-initiated transactions with proper scheme flags — recurring payments.
- Account updater and network tokens to keep cards valid after reissue.
- Smart retries and dunning for soft declines.
- Alternative recurring rails: direct debit, SEPA, ACH, UPI AutoPay in India (UPI).
- Clear descriptors and easy cancellation — the cheapest chargeback prevention.
- Chargeback alerts and chargeback management.
Risk tiers
- Low risk: SaaS and B2B tools with monthly invoices — see SaaS.
- Medium: consumer apps, media, memberships, boxes.
- High: free trials converting to paid plans, adult and dating memberships, nutra continuity — see high-risk, dating, nutra.
Billing logic can also sit in a separate layer — compare orchestration platforms and cashier software.
Using this hub
The hub works in both directions: subscription merchants describe what they need, and providers show how they handle rebills. Merchants post requests with their pricing model, trial terms, GEOs and monthly rebill volume; providers answer or publish an offer. As a merchant you can post a request; as a PSP, filter by GEO and open the Requests tab to find subscription merchants looking for a new or backup processor.
