Why nutra is high risk
Nutraceuticals — supplements, diet and beauty products, health devices — are usually sold through affiliate traffic, free-trial or "pay only shipping" funnels and recurring rebills. That mix generates refunds and chargebacks, and card schemes watch it closely. As a result, nutra merchant accounts are typically underwritten as high risk (often MCC 5967 or 5499), with reserves and strict monitoring.
Common nutra payment setups
- Straight sale on cards with clear descriptors and no hidden rebills — the easiest model to place.
- Trial and continuity — accepted by fewer acquirers; needs cancellation flows and chargeback alerts.
- Cash on delivery (COD) in GEOs where cards are rare; collection is done by couriers and logistics partners.
- Local methods in Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe — see local payment methods.
- Load balancing across several MIDs through aggregators or an orchestration platform.
What to check with a nutra PSP
- Accepted product categories and claims (weight loss, CBD and pharmacy-adjacent products are treated differently).
- Rolling reserve, settlement delay and chargeback ratio limits.
- Required documents: product labels, landing pages, refund policy, supplier invoices.
- Antifraud and chargeback management tools, including pre-dispute alerts.
- Payouts for affiliates if you run your own network — see mass payouts.
For providers and merchants
Nutra merchants list their GEOs, offer model and monthly volume; high-risk acquirers and PSPs can answer those requests or publish terms on the offers board. The vertical overlaps with high-risk e-commerce and subscriptions. Merchants who don't see a fit can post a request — Nominal hub does not process payments itself.
