Google Pay for merchants

Google Pay lets customers pay with cards saved in their Google account or on an Android device. Like Apple Pay, it is a tokenised card payment: the provider receives either a gateway token or a network token (DPAN with a cryptogram) and processes it through card acquiring. The button works in Chrome on any OS and inside Android apps, so it covers a large part of mobile traffic outside iOS.

Note: the card wallet Google Pay is different from Google Pay in India, which is a UPI app. For India see Google Pay UPI and UPI.

Integration options

  • Gateway tokenisation: the simplest route — your PSP is listed as a supported gateway and decrypts the token for you.
  • Direct tokenisation: you decrypt payloads yourself; requires PCI DSS scope and key management.
  • Hosted payment page or SDK from the provider, or a cashier that already includes the button.

Fees and risk

Google does not take a merchant fee; you pay your PSP rate for card processing. Authentication rules differ: tokens with a cryptogram may skip extra 3-D Secure steps in some regions, while plain card-on-file tokens still go through SCA in Europe. Chargebacks follow card scheme rules.

Checklist for choosing a provider

  • Google Pay support on web and Android, not only one of them.
  • Accepted verticals: high-risk, iGaming, digital goods.
  • Recurring and merchant-initiated transactions with Google Pay tokens.
  • Settlement currency, payout schedule and reserves.
  • GEO coverage: availability of the wallet itself varies by country.
