Mobile money as a payment method

Mobile money is a wallet tied to a phone number and run by a mobile operator or its fintech arm. In East and West Africa it is the main way people pay and get paid online: M-Pesa in Kenya and Tanzania, MTN MoMo in Ghana, Uganda and Côte d'Ivoire, Airtel Money across several markets, Orange Money in francophone West Africa. Customers confirm a payment with a USSD prompt or in the operator app, so no card is needed.

What a mobile money aggregator does

Connecting to each operator separately means separate contracts, technical integrations and settlement accounts in every country. A mobile money aggregator in Africa offers one mobile money API for collections (STK push / USSD prompt), payouts to wallets, status callbacks and settlement in local currency or USD. Some also add cards and bank transfers in the same checkout.

Main GEOs

  • Kenya: M-Pesa dominates; Paybill and Till numbers for merchants — PSPs in Kenya.
  • Ghana, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon: MTN MoMo, Airtel, Orange — Ghana, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire.
  • Tanzania: several operators side by side — Tanzania.
  • Egypt and North Africa: mobile wallets alongside cards and instant bank transfers — Egypt.

What to compare

  • Operators actually connected in each country, not just "pan-African coverage".
  • Collection and payout fees; payouts are often priced per transaction rather than percent.
  • Transaction limits set by operators and KYC tiers of the customer's wallet.
  • Settlement currency, FX spread for USD settlement, settlement speed.
  • Support for refunds and reversal of failed payouts.
