What prefunding is

Many payment flows require money to be in place before transactions happen. A payout provider must hold a balance to send withdrawals; a P2P team must lock a security deposit with a provider; a merchant may need to prefund a payout account in another currency. Prefunding providers supply that liquidity for a fee, so businesses can scale volume without freezing their own capital.

Typical prefunding products

  • Payout prefunding: a lender or liquidity partner tops up your payout balance and is repaid from incoming settlements.
  • Security deposit financing: covering the insurance deposit required by a P2P provider or acquirer.
  • Settlement bridging: funding the gap between paying out today and receiving settlement in T+1 or later.
  • Revolving limits: a credit line that is drawn and repaid several times a week.
  • Stablecoin-based prefunding: liquidity provided in USDT, often combined with stablecoin settlement.

Key terms to compare

  • Cost: daily or monthly rate, arrangement fee, and how unused limits are charged.
  • Collateral: receivables, cash deposit, crypto collateral or guarantees.
  • Limit size and growth: how the limit increases with track record.
  • Repayment mechanics: automatic deduction from settlements or manual repayment.
  • Currencies and rails: fiat, USDT, specific payout corridors.
  • Documentation: contract, jurisdiction, what happens on default or dispute.
