What SEPA payments are

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is the euro bank transfer system covering the EU, EEA and several other countries including the UK and Switzerland. It has three main schemes: SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT, usually next business day), SEPA Instant (SCT Inst, seconds, 24/7) and SEPA Direct Debit (see direct debit). For merchants SEPA is a low-cost way to collect euro payments and to pay out to IBANs.

How to accept SEPA payments

  • Virtual IBANs: the provider issues a unique IBAN per customer or per invoice and reconciles incoming transfers automatically.
  • Pay-by-bank via open banking: the customer authorises a SEPA Instant transfer from their bank app — no manual typing of IBANs.
  • Payment page with bank transfer instructions: simplest, but reconciliation is slower.

SEPA payouts and API

A SEPA payout API lets you send refunds, affiliate commissions or marketplace payouts to any IBAN in the zone. Check whether payouts go through SCT Inst, what the cut-off times are, and how failed transfers are returned. For mass payouts see payouts providers.

Fees, limits and risk

SEPA fees for merchants are typically a flat amount per transfer rather than a percentage, which makes it attractive for large tickets. SEPA Instant has a per-transaction limit set by the scheme and individual banks. Credit transfers cannot be charged back like cards, but SEPA Direct Debit can be reversed by the payer for weeks. Risk teams still look at the source of funds, especially for iGaming, forex and crypto.

Choosing a SEPA provider

  • Licence: EMI or bank, safeguarding of client funds.
  • Named vs pooled virtual IBANs, country of the IBAN (some customers prefer local prefixes).
  • SEPA Instant availability for both pay-ins and payouts.
  • Accepted verticals and onboarding time.
