Recurring payments explained

Recurring payments are charges taken automatically on a schedule after the customer agrees once: monthly subscriptions, memberships, instalments, usage-based billing. Technically they are merchant-initiated transactions (MIT) on a stored credential — a card token, a wallet token, a direct debit mandate or, in some markets, a recurring mandate on a local method such as UPI AutoPay or PIX Automático.

Who needs a recurring payment gateway

  • SaaS and digital subscriptions, including apps selling outside app stores.
  • Media, dating, education and fitness memberships.
  • Utilities, insurance and lending (often via ACH or direct debit).

Subscription models in high-risk verticals (dating, adult, nutra trial offers) face stricter monitoring of chargeback ratios and descriptor rules.

Key features to look for

  • Tokenisation and network tokens — card updates without asking the customer to re-enter data.
  • Account updater to refresh expired or reissued cards.
  • Smart retries and dunning — retry declined charges at better times and notify customers.
  • SCA handling in Europe — first payment with authentication, later charges flagged as MIT.
  • Subscription billing platform features: plans, proration, trials, invoices, tax.

Fees and settlement

You pay the normal processing rate per charge plus, in some cases, a billing platform fee. Recurring traffic with clean history can lower risk pricing over time; high refund or chargeback rates raise reserves.

How to choose

  • Supported methods per GEO (cards, direct debit, local mandates).
  • Migration of existing tokens from your current processor.
  • Chargeback alerts and chargeback management tools.
  • Merchant of record vs direct merchant model.
