What ACH is
ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the US network for bank-to-bank transfers. It handles payroll, bill payments, subscriptions and B2B invoices. Merchants use two directions: ACH debit (you pull funds from the customer's account with authorisation) and ACH credit (you push money out — payouts, refunds, vendor payments). Same Day ACH speeds up settlement for eligible transactions; standard ACH usually settles in one to three business days.
Why merchants accept ACH payments
- Lower cost than cards for large or recurring tickets — fees are often flat or capped instead of a full percentage.
- Recurring billing: rent, utilities, insurance, SaaS and service businesses on recurring payments.
- B2B: invoices that are too large for cards.
Risks: returns and disputes
ACH has no chargebacks in the card sense, but it has returns: insufficient funds, closed account, or an "unauthorized" claim. Consumer unauthorized returns can arrive weeks after the debit. That is why ACH for casino, high-risk or first-time customers needs bank account verification (instant account verification via open banking or micro-deposits) and sometimes delayed release of funds.
How to accept ACH payments
- 1.Choose an ACH payment provider or PSP with a US sponsor bank.
- 2.Collect authorisation (online mandate wording) and verify the account.
- 3.Integrate the ACH API or a hosted checkout; set up webhooks for returns.
ACH payouts
An ACH payout API is common for marketplaces, gig platforms and affiliate programmes. Ask about batch files vs API, Same Day ACH windows, and fees per payout.
What to compare
- Per-transaction fee, cap, and return fees.
- Settlement time and reserve policy.
- Accepted verticals and onboarding requirements for non-US companies.
