Card acquiring and gateways

Card acquiring is still the default way to take online payments in most markets: the customer pays with Visa, Mastercard or a local card scheme, and an acquirer settles the funds to the merchant. This page lists acquirers, PSPs with their own acquiring connections and payment gateways with card acquiring for e-commerce, subscriptions, travel, gaming and other verticals.

Types of card acquiring you will find here

  • E-commerce (internet) acquiring — card-not-present payments on a website or in an app, with 3-D Secure.
  • International card acquiring — an acquirer in one jurisdiction (EU, UK, Asia) processing customers from many countries; often the route for non-resident companies.
  • Local acquiring — an acquirer in the customer's country; usually higher approval rates and local currency settlement.
  • Acquiring for high risk — iGaming, forex, dating, nutra, adult, crypto; stricter onboarding, reserves and higher fees.
  • MOTO and recurring — card-on-file, subscriptions and merchant-initiated transactions.

What to compare

  • Fees: merchant discount rate (blended or interchange++), per-transaction fee, chargeback and refund fees. Low-risk e-commerce and high-risk pricing can differ several times.
  • Approval rate by BIN country and whether cascading to a second acquirer is available.
  • Reserve and settlement: rolling reserve percentage and period, payout schedule, settlement currency.
  • Requirements: company jurisdiction, processing history, website compliance, licences for regulated verticals.
  • Integration: hosted page, server-to-server API, tokenisation, plugins.

Banks that issue acquiring directly are in acquiring banks. For routing between several acquirers see aggregators & cascading and payment orchestration. Disputes are covered in chargeback management, fraud screening in antifraud. Merchants with risky profiles can also browse high-risk merchants to see what others in the vertical are looking for.
