What a payment aggregator is
A payment aggregator connects a merchant to many acquirers, local methods and P2P providers under one contract and one integration. Behind the scenes it decides where each transaction goes. For a merchant this means faster launch in new GEOs and less dependency on a single acquirer; for a smaller PSP it is a way to offer methods it does not have itself.
Cascading and smart payment routing
- Cascading — if the first provider declines a payment, the transaction is retried on the next one in the chain, so a soft decline does not become a lost sale.
- Smart routing — choosing the provider in advance based on BIN country, card type, amount, method, time of day or current approval rate.
- Load balancing — splitting volume between providers to stay within limits and keep backup routes warm.
- Failover — automatic switch when a provider is down.
Done well, cascading lifts the overall approval rate; done badly, it creates duplicate attempts and higher fraud flags, so ask how retries are controlled.
Aggregator vs orchestration platform
An aggregator holds the contracts and usually the money flow; a payment orchestration platform is software that routes between providers you contract with directly. Some companies offer both. If you want your own routing stack, also look at white-label processing and cashier solutions.
What to compare
- Real list of connected providers and methods per GEO.
- Pricing: one blended rate vs pass-through of each provider's fee plus a margin.
- Routing rules: can you set them yourself, see per-provider statistics, exclude routes?
- Settlement: one consolidated payout or separate settlements per provider; reserves.
- Accepted verticals — many aggregators specialise in high-risk, iGaming or forex.
