A US business with both a physical and a digital catalogue is looking for a Merchant of Record for digital goods. The MoR should handle worldwide digital orders and the tax on them, while Shopify checkout stays free of unnecessary redirects.
What is needed - an MoR for standalone digital orders; - Shopify checkout integration; - preferably an on-domain checkout.
Why an external MoR The thread started as a request for a native Shopify feature, but participants confirmed the platform cannot cover the case natively. In a September follow-up the merchant said plainly that an external MoR is needed. No provider has been picked yet. Tax views shared in the thread are participants' opinions, not verified guidance.
Geography The company is registered in the United States. Physical goods ship only within the US; digital goods sell worldwide.
Volume The store is trading, but monthly volume and customer count are not stated.
Who should respond MoR platforms that plug into Shopify and can split a cart: the merchant keeps physical items, and digital items go through the MoR.
