What PIX is
PIX is the instant payment system of the Banco Central do Brasil. It moves money between accounts 24/7 in seconds, and since launch it has become the default way Brazilians pay online, ahead of cards and boleto. Customers pay by scanning a QR code or pasting a "copia e cola" code into their bank app, or by sending to a PIX key (CPF, phone, email or random key).
How merchants accept PIX
- Dynamic QR / copy-paste code generated per order with a fixed amount and expiry.
- Instant confirmation via webhook, so goods or deposits can be credited in real time.
- PIX payouts: refunds, withdrawals and mass payouts to any PIX key — popular with marketplaces, gaming and affiliate platforms.
- PIX Automático and recurring flows for subscriptions where the provider supports them.
Foreign merchants usually need a local partner: a licensed payment institution or a cross-border PSP that collects in BRL and settles abroad in USD, EUR or USDT. Some flows also run through P2P processing.
What to check with a PIX provider
- Pay-in and payout pricing (percentage or fixed fee per transaction) and minimums.
- Settlement: BRL locally or FX to foreign currency, timing, reserves.
- Name/CPF matching rules for payouts and refund handling — PIX has no card-style chargeback, but MED (special return mechanism) claims exist.
- Transaction limits, night-time limits and KYC of payers.
- Supported verticals: iGaming and betting require a provider that works with licensed operators.
