Mobile money in Africa and beyond
Mobile money wallets are operated by telecoms and work on any phone: M-Pesa in Kenya and Tanzania, MTN MoMo in Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire, Airtel Money across East and Central Africa, Orange Money and Wave in francophone West Africa. In these markets mobile money often reaches more people than bank cards, so it is the first method merchants add.
How mobile money acceptance works
- STK push / USSD prompt: the customer enters a phone number at checkout and confirms with a PIN on the handset.
- Paybill / till number payments with a reference, reconciled automatically.
- Mobile money payouts (B2C): withdrawals, salaries, cashback and mass payouts to wallets.
- Aggregators give one API for several operators and countries, which saves separate telco integrations.
What to check with a provider
- Operators covered in each country and whether integration is direct or via a partner.
- Pay-in and payout fees, operator charges and FX spread.
- Transaction and daily wallet limits; maximum ticket size.
- Settlement in local currency or USD/USDT, frequency and reserve.
- Reversal and refund process — mobile money has no chargebacks, but reversals exist.
- Accepted verticals (betting and gaming are common but require compliant providers).
