E-wallets as a payment method

E-wallets store value or link to a card or bank account and let customers pay with a login, QR or push confirmation. Global wallets (PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Apple Pay and Google Pay as tokenised wallets) sit next to local ones that dominate their home markets: GCash and Maya in the Philippines, DANA, OVO and GoPay in Indonesia, Touch 'n Go in Malaysia, PayPay in Japan, eSewa in Nepal, Vodafone Cash in Egypt, Yape in Peru.

Why merchants add e-wallets

  • Higher conversion for users without cards or with low card approval.
  • Fast or instant confirmation and simple refunds.
  • In many wallets — cheap payouts and withdrawals back to the same wallet.
  • Lower fraud than card-not-present payments, with no classic chargeback scheme in most local wallets.

Integration options

  • Direct merchant account with the wallet operator (strict KYB, often local entity needed).
  • PSP or APM aggregator with one API for many wallets — see e-wallet PSPs and local payment methods.
  • P2P route through personal wallets for markets where merchant onboarding is hard (P2P processing).

What to compare

  • Wallets covered per country, pay-in and payout fees, minimums.
  • Transaction and daily limits, refund and dispute rules.
  • Settlement currency and speed, reserves.
  • Accepted verticals and documents required.

By country

Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Egypt, Peru, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, United States.
