How direct debit works
Direct debit is a pull payment: the customer signs a mandate once, and the merchant (through its provider) collects amounts from the customer's bank account on agreed dates. It suits predictable, repeated charges — memberships, utilities, insurance, loans, B2B services and SaaS. Major schemes include SEPA Direct Debit (Core and B2B) in the euro zone, BACS Direct Debit in the UK, ACH debit in the US (ACH) and PAD in Canada.
Advantages over cards
- No card expiry or reissue problems, so involuntary churn on recurring payments is lower.
- Lower processing costs, often a fixed fee per collection.
- Works for customers without cards or with low card limits.
Risks and timing
Collections are not instant: debits are submitted in advance and settle in days. Customers can reverse payments within scheme-defined windows (for SEPA Core, refunds without a reason for weeks, and longer for unauthorised debits). Failed collections because of insufficient funds need retry logic. For this reason direct debit is rarely used for one-off high-risk payments such as casino deposits.
How to set up direct debit
- 1.Choose a provider that is a scheme participant or works via a sponsor bank / EMI.
- 2.Collect mandates online (e-mandates) with correct wording and pre-notification rules.
- 3.Integrate an API for mandate creation, collection scheduling and webhooks for failures.
- 4.Optionally verify accounts through open banking to cut failures.
What to compare
- Supported schemes and countries, B2B vs consumer mandates.
- Fee per collection, failure and refund fees.
- Payout timing and reserves.
- Tools for retries, dunning and reconciliation.
