Cash for online payments

Cash-based methods let customers without cards or bank apps pay online: the checkout generates a voucher or reference, and the customer pays it in cash at a convenience store, pharmacy, bank branch, lottery outlet or agent. The provider confirms the payment to the merchant when the cash is collected. This is still a meaningful share of e-commerce and gaming deposits across Latin America, parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Where cash vouchers matter

  • Brazil: boleto bancário, now competing with PIX.
  • Mexico: OXXO and other store networks.
  • Colombia: Efecty, Baloto and similar points.
  • Peru, Chile, Argentina: PagoEfectivo, Rapipago, Pago Fácil-type networks.
  • Egypt: Fawry reference codes; Nigeria: agent banking and bank branch deposits.

How it works for the merchant

  1. 1.Customer selects cash at checkout and receives a reference or barcode with an expiry date.
  2. 2.Payment is made at a physical point; confirmation arrives asynchronously, from minutes to a business day or more.
  3. 3.Merchant ships or credits the account after confirmation.

Expect lower conversion than instant methods (some vouchers are never paid) and plan stock or bonus logic around the delay.

Fees, limits and risk

Fees are often a fixed amount per paid voucher or a percentage with a minimum. Ticket limits are set by the networks. There are no card chargebacks, which makes cash attractive for some higher-risk models, but providers still apply KYC rules and AML monitoring on cash flows.
