What BNPL is
Buy now, pay later lets a customer split a purchase into instalments while the merchant is paid upfront (minus a fee) by the BNPL provider. The provider takes the credit and collection risk. Models range from "pay in 4" interest-free splits to longer financing plans, and in some markets — notably Brazil — card instalments (parcelado) play a similar role through the acquirer rather than a separate lender.
Who uses BNPL
- E-commerce with mid to high average tickets: fashion, electronics, furniture, travel.
- Education and courses, where instalments make a higher price acceptable.
- Services booked in advance.
BNPL is rarely available for high-risk verticals such as iGaming, adult or forex; providers usually restrict both MCC and product type.
Merchant fees and settlement
The merchant fee is generally higher than standard card processing because it covers the credit risk and marketing benefit. Settlement is typically a few days after the order or shipment. Refunds are passed back through the provider, which then adjusts the customer's plan. Disputes are handled under the provider's rules rather than card scheme chargebacks.
How to accept BNPL payments
- Directly with a BNPL lender (separate contract and integration).
- Through a PSP or aggregator that includes BNPL in one checkout.
- Via a cashier or orchestration layer that routes to local instalment options by country.
What to check
- Ticket limits (minimum and maximum order value) and eligible GEOs.
- Who bears the risk of non-payment and how returns affect payouts.
- Customer approval rate at checkout and how declines are shown.
- Branding requirements and on-site messaging rules.
