What a merchant account is
A merchant account is an account with an acquirer that receives revenue from card payments. Without one, a business cannot take cards directly. The company helps open it and connects it to processing.
High-risk merchants
Banks usually class as high-risk the industries with many refunds and chargebacks or complex regulation. Standard acquirers often decline such companies, so they need a partner that works with this category specifically. Terms for high-risk are usually stricter: higher rates, possible reserves and a more detailed business review.
What to keep in mind
