Overview

Toast is a payment facilitator (PayFac) for restaurants and hospitality in the United States. The company onboards venues itself, sets pricing, handles settlement and manages risk, with funds moving through its financial partners.

How the model works

A PayFac acts as a master merchant: the venue does not sign a separate contract with an acquiring bank but becomes the provider's sub-merchant. This speeds up onboarding and reduces paperwork. One important detail: card payments must run through Toast POS, so the payment service comes bundled with the point-of-sale system rather than separately.

Methods

  • bank cards;
  • POS payments at the table, at the counter and at order pickup.

Who it serves

  • restaurants, cafes and bars;
  • hotels and other hospitality businesses.

It suits venues that want their till and payment acceptance from one supplier without dealing with acquiring on their own.

Coverage and terms

The main market is the US; other countries need separate confirmation. Rates are not published: under a PayFac model the provider sets them, so compare the offer together with the cost of POS hardware and subscription.
