Merchant account versus gateway
To accept cards online, a business needs two things:
- 1.A merchant account, an agreement with an acquirer through which customer funds flow.
- 2.A payment gateway, the technology that passes payment data from the website to the acquirer and returns the response.
A merchant provider of this type helps with both: it looks for an acquirer willing to work with the client's industry and connects the gateway. For high-risk projects the first part is usually harder, and it is where most declines happen.
Who it may suit
Companies that were turned down for standard acquiring or operate in a niche with a higher share of refunds and disputes. The company states it works with such businesses, but approval of a specific project depends on a review.
