Overview
POLi New Zealand is a bank-based payment provider that lets merchants accept online payments directly from the shopper's bank account. No card is involved: the customer pays through their own internet banking. The service is also searched as POLi payment NZ, POLi Pay or PoliPay NZ.
How a payment works
The shopper picks this option at checkout, logs in to their bank and confirms the transfer. The store receives payment confirmation and can release the order. For sellers, the method keeps a convenient way to pay online open for customers without a card or with low card limits.
Why merchants in New Zealand use it
- many New Zealand shoppers are used to paying by bank transfer and some prefer not to enter card details online;
- the payment is confirmed during checkout, so the order does not wait for a manual bank transfer to arrive;
- it works as an extra option next to cards, not a replacement.
How bank payments differ from cards
- money comes from an account rather than a card credit line;
- no card data passes through the store that would need protecting;
- refunds work differently from card chargebacks, which is worth discussing during onboarding.
Coverage and terms
The name points to the New Zealand market, though the exact list of banks and countries is not given in the description. Fees, settlement timing and merchant requirements are clarified at application stage.
