Overview
KENEX (Kenya Commerce Exchange Service Bureau) is an infrastructure company listed in the Central Bank of Kenya directory of authorised PSPs. The regulator has authorised it to process SWIFT payments on behalf of banks.
What a SWIFT service bureau is
SWIFT is the international network banks use to exchange transfer messages. Connecting directly requires in-house infrastructure, certifications and a support team. A service bureau takes over this work: the bank connects to SWIFT through the operator and sends and receives payment messages without running its own gateway.
Who it is for
- Banks that need access to international transfers without the cost of a direct connection.
- Financial institutions comparing SWIFT connectivity options in Kenya.
For an ordinary merchant this is not a payment gateway: the company works at the interbank infrastructure level.
Licence and legal entity
Kenya Commerce Exchange Service Bureau, Kenya. Its first licence was issued on 16 March 2023.
What to clarify
Commercial terms, pricing and countries served are not public. They are discussed with the client bank during onboarding.
