Overview

Kakao Pay is an e-wallet and business payment service in South Korea, launched in 2014. Merchants can accept wallet payments online, in physical stores and as recurring charges.

Payment scenarios

  • Online payments on the shop's website or app.
  • In-store payments, where the customer pays with the wallet at the till.
  • Recurring payments for subscriptions and periodic charges without confirming each one again.

For businesses with a Korean audience this is a familiar way to pay: the customer approves the payment on their phone without entering card details.

Onboarding

For online payments the service provides developer documentation, and merchant registration is described in its onboarding section. Fees and settlement times are set in the merchant agreement.

Coverage

The service operates in the South Korean market. Foreign sellers should check whether onboarding is possible without a local entity.

The operator is KakaoPay Corp, Ltd, based in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.
