Overview
Interswitch is a PSP and payment gateway for accepting online payments. It combines cards with local African channels used by customers who have no smartphone or no card.
Payment methods
- Cards — debit and credit.
- Bank transfers — payment directly from an account.
- USSD — paying via a short code on any basic phone, with no internet or app; in African markets it is one of the most widely used options.
- QR — the customer scans a code and confirms payment in their banking app.
This mix means the merchant does not lose customers without a card: they pay with whatever their phone supports.
Regulation in Kenya
The Kenyan arm, Interswitch East Africa (Kenya) Limited, is listed in the Central Bank of Kenya's register. Its authorised activity is managing payment services infrastructure, with the first licence granted on 1 January 2019. For merchants, this confirms the infrastructure operates under regulatory supervision.
What to clarify
Fees, payout timing and the list of countries where merchants can be onboarded are not given on the card.
