Overview
Cobalt Payments is a merchant services and gateway provider for high-risk businesses. It works on a reseller model: it is not the acquirer itself but connects clients to PaymentCloud services.
How a reseller works
The reseller handles solution selection, application preparation and merchant support, while the payments are processed by a partner, in this case PaymentCloud. For the client this means the contract and processing terms are effectively set by the partner, and the reseller helps get through underwriting and handles day-to-day issues.
Who it serves
The target audience is high-risk merchants: companies with subscription models, high refund rates, regulated goods or a complicated processing history that struggle to get a merchant account at a regular bank.
Things to check
- who will be the contracting party and who provides support;
- reserves and payout timing, which are usually stricter for high risk;
- approval of a specific business is not guaranteed.
