Crypto as a payment method
A crypto payment gateway lets merchants accept Bitcoin, Ethereum and, above all, stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. Customers pay from any wallet or exchange account; the gateway detects the transaction on-chain, credits the order and settles the merchant in crypto or converts to fiat. For cross-border, high-risk and emerging-market traffic crypto is often the most reliable rail.
Typical features
- Invoices and deposit addresses per order or per customer, with confirmations tracked automatically.
- Networks: TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20, Solana, Polygon and others — fees and speed differ a lot.
- Auto-conversion to USD, EUR or local currency, or holding balances in USDT.
- Crypto payouts and mass payouts for withdrawals, affiliates and suppliers.
- On/off-ramp for customers who pay by card and receive crypto.
What to check with a crypto payment provider
- Processing fee (often a small percentage), network fees, withdrawal fees.
- Supported coins and chains; handling of underpayments and wrong networks.
- AML / KYT screening of incoming funds and what happens to flagged coins (see AML & KYT).
- Licences (VASP / CASP) and jurisdictions served.
- Custody model, settlement speed, API and plugins.
