About
Fintech: Under the Hood is a Substack by Jas Shah, a product person who started as an engineer on a trading desk and built products at Citibank, Schroders and Fidelity. The Under the Hood newsletter picks one fintech topic per issue, roughly every two weeks, and unpacks it with a product lens (and the odd pun).
Recent topics
The 9 October issue asked what would change if consumers saw every payment option at checkout. On 18 September it explained how fintech onboarding really works. In July came a thought experiment: what should Stripe keep, rebuild or reinvent if it bought PayPal. The explainer series covers Variable Recurring Payments (24 April) and stablecoin wallets (26 June), and there are podcast episodes such as the Allica Bank CEO Richard Davies (22 May).
Why payments people read it
The pieces stay at product level, so they show how checkout, onboarding and open banking features are meant to work before the regulation or the vendor pitch arrives. Posts are in English and free. Product managers at PSPs, banks and wallets will find the most use.
Payments angle
Product-level explainers on VRP, Pay by Bank, checkout choice and onboarding flows, useful for PSP and wallet product teams.
