The trader has collateral. Why is there still no cash for payouts?
Collateral, working balances and customer funds serve different purposes. Calculate free collateral, revaluation and genuinely executable payout liquidity.
Imagine a trader with a deposit worth two million. An hour later, 300,000 of payouts are assigned and the queue stalls: only 150,000 is available in the eligible bank account. There is formal backing but insufficient money to send. This failure occurs when several assets and restrictions are compressed into one word: balance.
In P2P, deposit can mean a security deposit, a prefunded settlement balance, the digital asset held for a particular exchange trade, or an incoming customer payment. Sometimes even an onboarding fee gets the label. Before funding anything, establish the economic meaning of every amount: who owns it, where it is held, when it can be reduced and how it is returned.
Four separate layers
Collateral secures specified obligations of a participant. A working settlement balance funds operations permitted by the agreement. Customer funds arise from customer payments and remain subject to the applicable custody and use requirements. Executable liquidity means money that can fund a particular payout in the required currency, through an available channel and by the required time.
Public market offers sometimes distinguish these categories explicitly. A FinAxis recruitment offer lists separate security and working components of 1,000 USDT each. That is a recruitment site’s statement about one product, not independent verification of its terms, legality or safety. The useful contractual question is which portion of a funding transfer is reserved, which is consumed in settlement and which, if any, is non-refundable.
Exchange rules likewise cannot be copied into every processing network. Bybit’s help page describes an advertiser security deposit as frozen assets that can, under specified conditions, compensate a counterparty. Another platform may use a different structure. A deposit does not establish that all losses are insured or that a bank permits the operating model.
Dashboard labels do not establish how funds are legally held. A working-balance debit may reduce the platform’s debt to the trader with each confirmed collection while leaving a fixed security reserve unchanged. Another structure reserves collateral after collection and discharges the debt through a separate settlement transfer. Establish which entry is a final debit, which is a temporary hold and who retains the asset. Both structures must not be applied to the same amount without a valid basis.
Calculate free collateral
Consider an illustrative model with contractually permitted collateral in a digital asset. The trader posts 20,000 units of that asset. For limit calculations, the system uses an exchange rate of 90 settlement-currency units and a 10% haircut. The nominal valuation is 1,800,000, while recognized collateral value after the haircut is 1,620,000.
Of that value, 500,000 already backs assigned operations that have not settled. Another 120,000 is held against specific open disputes. The agreement also requires a standing minimum reserve of 200,000. Free capacity for new operations is therefore 800,000: 1,620,000 less 500,000, 120,000 and 200,000. This formula belongs to the example. In a real agreement, the same risk must not be deducted twice if a dispute is already included in the main reservation.
The system should expose the basis of every hold. A single locked balance of 620,000 is of little use without the underlying obligations: nobody can tell which operations must close to restore capacity. References to orders or cases, exposure currency, creation time and release condition make the number actionable. Support can then discuss a specific hold rather than argue about a total.
The haircut reduces recognized collateral value. It is not a fee and does not mean 10% of the asset has been confiscated. The trader still has the contractual claim to the relevant number of units, less justified deductions. Adverse prices, custody restrictions or an inability to sell can nevertheless make actual protection weaker than its calculated value.
Why 800,000 cannot become immediate payouts
The trader has 300,000 in an eligible bank account. Of this, 90,000 is already committed to other payouts and 60,000 is an agreed operating buffer. Only 150,000 is currently available for new outgoing transfers. An expected receipt of 450,000 is due that evening, while today’s payouts must leave by 15:00. Until the receipt is confirmed, it is a forecast rather than executable funding.
A new 200,000 payout passes the collateral test because 800,000 is free. It fails the liquidity test because only 150,000 can be sent. The operator must use an allowed queue, select another eligible executor or obtain confirmed funding. Removing the protective limit will not create the missing 50,000.
Location matters too. Money in another account, another currency or an asset subject to withdrawal delay may miss the deadline. A payout model therefore needs availability by channel and time, not just an aggregate total. Customer money cannot become unrestricted working capital merely because it appears on the same screen. Its applicable protection requirements must be assessed separately from trader collateral policy.
A deposit’s life after funding
Funding moves through sent, detected, checked and credited-to-eligible-collateral stages. Until the prescribed checks finish, the new amount should not automatically increase operational capacity. For a digital asset, the network, recipient and required confirmations matter; the particular product defines those requirements. For bank funding, actual credit and an eligible source are material.
Revaluation follows. If the example’s valuation rate falls from 90 to 80, recognized collateral becomes 1,440,000. With unchanged holds totaling 820,000, free capacity falls to 620,000. The participant withdrew nothing, but its ability to assume new obligations fell by 180,000. The system limits new assignments under the agreement rather than pretending yesterday’s valuation still applies.
When an operation closes, its reservation is released on the agreed event, perhaps settlement rather than a payment-received message. A confirmed loss triggers a separate application of collateral with a stated basis, amount and linked obligation. Limits are recalculated after the deduction. Any subsequent recovery is also recorded separately. Otherwise, one incident can quietly reduce the deposit twice.
Withdrawal tests the model’s clarity
Free operating capacity and the amount withdrawable today may differ. Exit conditions, unfinished orders, disputes, notice periods and custody restrictions can govern withdrawal. Participants need to see them before funding. A promise to return money after all issues are resolved, without a defined procedure, can leave them dependent on an indefinitely extending hold.
An exit reconciliation should show the initial deposit, later top-ups, every deduction and recovery, remaining obligations, valuation method and returnable amount. Each hold needs an accountable decision-maker and contractual basis. A sound model explains why funds are unavailable and which verifiable event will change that position.
Resilience requires two independent answers. Is recognized collateral sufficient for open exposure? Are permitted, available funds sufficient for the next payouts? A positive answer to either question does not answer the other. Keeping them separate reveals a cash shortage before the trader starts asking to postpone an already accepted order.
