What a high-risk merchant account is
A merchant account is the account through which a business accepts card payments. Banks and large acquirers often decline companies in higher-risk categories because of high chargeback rates, regulatory restrictions or the nature of the product. A specialised intermediary looks for an acquiring bank willing to work with that model.
Account types
- local, in the country where the business is registered;
- international, with a foreign acquirer when local banks are not an option.
