Cybersource is a payment gateway and fraud-management platform in the Visa family, with roots in Foster City, California, since 1994. Beyond processing transactions, it gives merchants tools to fight fraud and manage payment risk.
Capabilities - online checkout and payment acceptance; - Decision Manager, a fraud-detection engine; - device fingerprinting and a global fraud radar; - token management; - payer authentication (3DS).
The gateway links the merchant website or app with acquirers and card schemes: the buyer pays, the gateway sends the data for authorisation and returns the result within seconds. Visa Protect draws on insights from over 200 billion transactions across the Visa network, and the fraud tools are available either independently of acquiring or as part of the gateway.
Why fraud tools matter Fraudulent transactions lead to chargebacks, card scheme penalties and lost goods. Risk scoring checks each transaction against a set of signals and filters out suspicious payments before they go through, so fewer disputes make the relationship with the acquirer more stable.
Coverage and terms According to the provider, the gateway handles payments in 97% of the world's countries and territories. Pricing is enterprise SaaS or per-transaction, depending on volume and enabled modules. Target clients are large enterprises, airlines, retail, PSPs and banks.
