What a high-risk merchant is
Banks classify a business as high risk when disputes, refunds or regulatory issues are more likely. The reason may be the industry, a subscription model, sales across many countries or a short processing history. Such companies are often turned down for standard acquiring, so they look for providers that openly say they serve this segment.
Why a gateway helps
A gateway connects the merchant's website to acquiring banks and passes payment data. For a high-risk business it is also a way to connect several acquirers and avoid depending on a single bank.
